Lyn 05/22/11 06:46 pm Really interesting article on the Acorn Woodpeckers Marty! Are these birds mainly in the Pacific part of the country? I wondered because we have an abundance of Oak trees in our area, and I'd love to see this very nicely marked woodpecker. In our area we have a couple of nesting Red Bellied Woodpeckers, and quite a few Downy's.
martyc35 05/22/11 07:00 pm I don't think you will see them on Long Island, Lyn. They are mostly on the Pacific Coast and down into AZ and Mexico. The huge native oaks out here inhabit mostly the inland dry valleys and coastal valleys, but far enough inland to be pretty warm in the summer. I had acorn woodpeckers in Santa Rosa, where we were surrounded by oak trees, but there are none here in Eureka--too close to the beaches and not warm enough. Sorry!

Anne-UK1 05/24/11 05:30 pm What fascinating and clever birds. I love those granary trees. Thanks Marty.
