Thread subject: Rothes (Loch Garten Chick from 2009) is on the move
Name Date Message
Tiger 05/25/11 11:07 am The 2 year old osprey Rothes has finally decided to make the journey home. See Rothes
Marie 05/25/11 12:20 pm They seem to be getting restless by their second spring. Totally amazing for these two year olds to set of on such a long migration. Lets hope Rothes makes it all the way without encountering some of the obstacles that so many ospreys have to surmount.
DaisyG 05/25/11 12:51 pm Yes, safe journey to her. Lots of excitement here :)
martyc35 05/25/11 01:34 pm Great news! So that means that the Scottish ospreys don't wait three years to head home, as some in the Western Hemisphere seem to do, or did I get that wrong? These are coming back after two years?
marty
Celeste 05/25/11 03:48 pm According to Poole, Western Hemisphere juvenile osprey migrate back to their natal area in their 2nd year away.
martyc35 05/25/11 04:13 pm Oh, good, and thanks Celeste. I'd rather be wrong with my bad memory than to have our Western guys be "slow." As long as they are normal.

Tiger 05/25/11 04:50 pm Marty there has been a lot of misinfomation about with people saying that juvenile ospreys spend three to five years in Africa. I have never believed anything of the sort.
Anne-UK1 05/25/11 05:40 pm That's fantastic news - and what a great blog from Caroline at LG :)

So both Rothes and Rothiemurchus are heading home. Safe journeys to both - it will be absolutely fascinating to see where they head to once they reach home shores and if either or both pay a visit to their birth nest. Imagine the excitement at LG if Rothes were to call in!
DaisyG 05/25/11 05:41 pm Yes it is rather frustrating when you read wrong information like that. Especially from people who ought to know better.
martyc35 05/26/11 01:55 pm Well, now I have to adjust my estimate on how old the Lady at LotL is.
marty
Tiger 05/26/11 02:06 pm Marty. Lady appeared at LotL in 1991 when she was probably three years old. So she is most likely 23 years old not the 26 they keep citing.

Mind you we will never know the true answer.
martyc35 05/26/11 09:27 pm No, but at least I now have the best answer! Thanks, Tiger.
marty
Tiger 05/27/11 12:33 pm Thank you Marty.
