Melanie 08/26/11 09:17 am I normally wake up to my own "Dawn Chorus" but this morning I heard one Carolina Wren, saw a couple of grackles because we have an annoying neighbor who throws random food off her balcony and now I have one - count 'em - one cardinal outside my office window where we would normally be cardinal central - this year they had a bumper crop. No osprey - no hawk - not even a single seagull or vulture to be seen. Anywhere. That kind of thing is more unsettling than the approaching storm.
Anne-UK1 08/26/11 10:33 am It must feel really weird Melanie. Good to know though that wildlife can sense the approaching storm and take the chance to get out of the way.
martyc35 08/26/11 01:28 pm I send my sympathies. I've been watching the evacuation orders and plans, and I think they are right: the east coast has not seen a storm of this magnitude since the 1940s or perhaps even back into the 1890s. Stay safe, Mel, and all of you wherever you are, especially in the low-lying areas (Long Island, etc.). Sounds like the birds have a clue; that's a good warning sign. My thoughts are with you all,
marty
FOB Webmaster 08/27/11 08:50 am No bird song here since early Friday. And the stink bugs on my balcony have begun to cluster in little groups. Never seen that before.
Anne-UK1 08/27/11 12:14 pm Lisa, I just read your latest blog entry. I hope they've got your roof securely covered again now!
FOB Webmaster 08/30/11 08:02 am Thanks! I haven't heard how the Visitor Center did, but the Refuge reopened pretty fast after the hurricane, so I'm hoping that means the construction at the building wasn't damaged.
