Thread subject: Diving Ospreys
Name Date Message
Pam 09/06/11 08:07 am The Ospreys are still diving at Pohtiolampi. I just saw four or five dives during the last hour.

One of the dives was unusual. Instead of the usual splosh straight into the pool the bird skidded several metres across the surface of the water before catching its fish, leaving circles of water fanning out on the pool. It flew off with its catch which it seemed to have gripped in between half way up its legs rather than in its claws. I put a couple of pics of Flickr

Usually just as I switch to something else on my computer I heard the splosh of another dive....timing is everything ....ha ha !
Trishrg 09/06/11 08:22 am Very cool!
And I hear you about just missing things.... been happening for my whole life :-)
Celeste 09/06/11 08:30 am Those were hard shots to capture Pam! Great! I'd be still looking for the right keys to press!
Pam 09/06/11 09:44 am I have set a hotkey for captures Celeste. I keep my thumb on it and just press at the appropriate second. Even so, the Ospreys are too quick.
martyc35 09/06/11 02:40 pm Great pics, Pam. Love your sunflowers, too. Birdies bring us such bonuses.

Pam 09/07/11 08:00 am The sunflowers are fading now after several days of wind and rain, but they were a great gift from the birds Marty.
Is anyone else watching the Pohtiolampi cam? Only usually shows under 20 folk watching. The dives are worth a bit of patience waiting for. I added a couple more pics from this morning. Some of the birds seem to make a bit of a hash of fishing :-) I guess these are the youngsters fattening up ready for their migration and I don't think the website will keep the cam going after the end of this month.
Kelly 09/07/11 08:29 am Hi Pam :) I'm also tuning in today. Captured a dive ... I believe it may be the same as yours. Need to have quick fingers as they happen so fast! :)))

Pam 09/07/11 10:10 am Yes that was the same dive Kelly ! Quite a struggle that time.
