Melanie 10/01/11 03:36 pm I just dropped in on some of my favorite hawk watch sites (Kiptopeake on the tip of Virgininia's Eastern Shore, Hawk Mountain in PA and Cape May) looking at osprey numbers.

Of course we have just had a front come through which is great for migration and Cape May expects over 2000 birds to move through today alone. Yesterday they had 199 ospreys make the count while Kiptopeake took second place with 107. Poor Hawk Mountain only had 15, but then again they are much further west in Kempton PA.

I've been tracking the osprey counts for these three sites for the past several years and there are definite patterns to each species "push". My only beef with hawkwatches is they don't officially start until the beginning of Septermber so you don't see numbers that would reflect the O'Mom's leaving, but you do see peaks for O'Dads in early Sept and then the O'Kids in late Sept-Early Oct, cold fronts not withstanding
Peter 10/01/11 04:16 pm Great links Melanie.

Here are the Cape May counts from yesterday.

Cape May counts 30 SEPT 2011

Just amazing.

There is a reference below the table to Godwits, which may be the same as Rob has here?

Godwits

Even more amazing that such a small bird could migrate so far. Check the various links on this page.
