Thread subject: Alert about action needed re: Riverhead EPCAL
Name Date Message
Peter 03/09/12 07:03 pm Thanks to the heads up from zorro89 about the site, I found this request for us to communicate with everyone and request that the NYS DEC (and not the Town of Riverhead) be appointed lead agency to protect the fragile ecosystem which includes the vast Peconic River watershed. Folks, this is a really amazing area, and the hub of so much wildlife activity on Long Island, and perhaps southern New England.

Have a good weekend.
terryo 03/10/12 07:13 am It's unfortunate this site has been a political hot potato since the Navy "sold" it to the Town for a buck years ago. As seems to so often happen politicians play the blame game or are afraid to do what's right for the Town as opposed to do what's right for the environment. As Dianne has requested a phone call or a letter to a Town official could go a long way in helping to protect this fragile ecosystem. I love to watch NASCAR on TV (yeah, I know all they do is go around in a circle for 500 miles lol) yet a few years ago a developer proposed putting a NASCAR track/stadium in this area. Now that has to be the all time bone headed suggestion of the decade. It's bad enough that this area still has an active runway and I think FEDEX still flies into Calverton, that's bad enough. How about the proposal to put in an indoor snow "mountain" for skiers. Anyway thanks again for posting the link Peter. R/zorro89 aka terryo
Bob4 03/10/12 03:39 pm All the politicians care about is building something to increase the tax base. They should take a tour bus and go into Nassau County and see what building on every inch of vacant land has done for them.

The Calverton property should be left alone so everyone can enjoy open space instead of another mega mall.
Peter 03/10/12 04:50 pm Unfortunately, municipal deficit-spending has run amok for decades, so that towns like Riverhead are simply seeking to max out tax revenues.

NYT deficits

Ditto for Suffolk County. Not an encouraging situation when protecting the environment is the best long-term solution.
