Thread subject: Everyone okay on Long Island?

martyc35 04/10/12 07:49 pm I'm hearing about a bad fire that burned some houses, but I don't have any details. Hope all our birding friends are safe.

Celeste 04/11/12 06:15 am Just heard on the radio that the fires are contained in Suffolk County, (Manorville and Ridge).
Nancy L 04/11/12 12:09 pm The wild-fire was in the 'pine barrens' in a sparsely populated area - quite a few horse farms, though. It's in the center of Long Island, east of the Carmans River.
I have seens ospreys on the Oakdale merge nest as you go over the RR into Oakdale for 2 days now. Also on the nest on Montauk Hwy @ Hecksher Parkway.
martyc35 04/11/12 02:13 pm Good. Just wanted to be sure. Also good news about the ospreys. Thanks for the update.

Peter 04/11/12 02:32 pm Pretty intense fire -- images for your perusal:

Newsday images

The wind was very strong at the time, leading to the fire moving quickly and in a straight line more or less. Amazing to see the swath of charred area right next to healthy vegetation, houses, boats and so forth.

Fire departments from all over Long Island jumped on this one quickly (because of the major destruction by a wild fire decades ago), and apparently prevented this fire from becoming much worse.
Lyn 04/11/12 03:20 pm The wildfires were to the north and east of my area. I did hear all the fire equipment going out to the fire area though, as I live a block from the LI expressway, where all the trucks were driving on.
martyc35 04/11/12 04:25 pm Wow. I just looked at a map, and it wasn't very far from Brookhaven. Thanks, Peter, for all the pics, and Lyn, I'm glad to know you are safe. That was quite a scare.

Peter 04/11/12 04:29 pm Yes Marty, the threat to to BNL is what caught my attention. Scary to think how weird this could have become.

Long Island is still very dry, so one hopes that everyone will use good judgment now that the BBQ season is starting.
