Thread subject: Death in the Afternoon

||Sharing these webcams with all of you has taught me a lot about nature. We have seen osprey fratricide, predation by GHO and eagle and eggs that don't hatch leaving parent birds confused and maybe even sad.
All of this helped prepare me for my own backyard action yesterday. One of my favorite visitors, a Cooper's Hawk, made a kill right at my window, actually banged into the window.
Did the hawk get one of the many house finch, gold finch, house sparrows or doves that are attracted by my feeders? And there are plenty of them to choose from.
Sadly no, the hawk took my other favorite bird, the Black Phoebe. The Phoebe is a loner, maybe the same one has been coming for months or years. And, although I love the hawk, the Phoebe provided much more constant entertainment with the chirping and flitting about catching all those invisible bugs.
The back yard is much quieter today. I can only hope that another Phoebe will find us and fill the empty place. So I think I will leave for a couple of weeks and cruise to Alaska. Will report back what great birds I see there.

||Yikes! I can't say I've ever seen an actual kill before my eyes, only the aftermath. So sorry about your Phoebe. :-(
Have a wonderful time on your cruise!! Great way to beat the heat (here in Toronto, anyhow, we are in the thick of it)

Have a great holiday in beautiful Alaska, lucky you.

||Oh dear. I know it's nature, but that's really sad.
I hope another Phoebe moves in soon. Meantime, enjoy your trip away.
