Thread subject: Blackwater chicks gone
Name Date Message
Trishrg 06/25/14 08:20 am Looks like a predator got the 2 chicks. I hope the adults are okay.

"06/24/14:

Chick Note

We are sad to report that we believe a predator took the two osprey chicks from the nest. Staff and volunteers have not seen them since late yesterday. We heard that there were bald eagles reported in the area, although the Great horned owl is also a common osprey predator. We'll share any news we get."

Sorry Lisa. :-(
Kathy 06/25/14 09:46 am So sad...sorry Lisa.
Nancy L 06/25/14 12:44 pm Yes, I looked in today & didn't see them. Very sad.
FOB Webmaster 06/25/14 12:56 pm Thanks, yes - very odd. They seemed to be doing really well, too. Volunteers said they saw eagles flying high over the nest, but we've never seen an eagle come to the nest when the ospreys were in residence. Makes me wonder about an owl.
Anne-UK 06/25/14 05:35 pm Oh that is so sad. Really sorry Lisa.
Shelley 06/25/14 07:06 pm How awful. How big were they? I'm assuming big enough to be left alone for periods of time? An owl (or any predator) wouldn't come to the nest if a parent was on it, would they?

So sorry to hear this
FOB Webmaster 06/25/14 10:04 pm They were about three weeks old. And yes, GHOs have been known to take out a parent on the nest, as well as the chicks, so they can be pretty aggressive.
cathleen 06/27/14 07:48 am This is very sad news when they seemed to be doing so well... GHOs are deadly enemies to an osprey nest.
bdee2 06/27/14 02:38 pm so sorry to read about the bad news :-(
martyc35 06/28/14 02:46 am That is very sad. Sorry, Lisa. Maybe next year...

FOB Webmaster 06/28/14 09:54 am Thanks all -- yes, hopefully these parents will try again next year at the nest.
DaisyG 07/08/14 06:22 pm So sorry to hear about this Lisa. Must be so hard when this happens.
