Shelley 08/03/14 07:29 am Good morning, all. I have been away for a week and just got home last night. In checking the cams this morning I noticed only 2 chicks on the nest, one with a nice-sized fish in its talons, eating and walking around with it. The second chick had nothing and seemed to be calling. Suddenly the third one landed nicely. Have all three fledged?

They are looking good, despite their stressful upbringing. Is the mother still bothering them or has she backed off since they fledged?
Anne-UK 08/03/14 02:55 pm Yes, all three fledged Shelley. The first and third apparently took off as if they'd been doing it all their lives. Quite amazing when you think how little chance they ever got to practise flapping and helicoptering.

It also seems as if C3 (or F3 as it's now known since fledging) is pretty good at getting hold of fish deliveries ahead of the other two.

Mum still goes on the attack every now and again, but obviously doesn't get the chance so often now the youngsters are away from the nest quite often.

The latest theory on her behaviour seems to leaning towards the problem stemming from dad being a poor provider. She apparently brings in the majority of fish herself. He has days when he's better and days when he's not much in evidence at all. If that's the case and she's going hungry a lot of the time then it would perhaps explain her behaviour. Still all theory of course.
